Addiction Treatment Methods

The debate over what the most effective addiction treatment method is has raged for centuries now. While historically addicts would be committed to asylums or simply shunned until they drove themselves into the ground, staggering leaps and bounds have been made in treatment options for patients in the past century. There are a number of different factors to take into consideration should you be struggling with addiction, be it to drugs, alcohol, or a combination of different substances. Help is out there, and there are plenty of people going through the same horrible events at any given time, so there is never a need to feel alone.

One of the big problems with addiction treatment methods is that there has been such a high failure rate for so many different rehab programs. There are so many variables to addiction that it seems impossible to find one type of program or system that will work for everyone going through this problem. However, in this problem there may lie the actual solution, in that the best way to treat drug and alcohol addiction is through an individualized approach. With this revelation, many have now been able to find relief.

Another problem and cause for failure of many drug rehab problems is the issue of timing. Some of the more effective systems out there require a time commitment of months or even a full year, but this is a problem because most people are not able to leave the "real world" for months out of the year. They may not have the time or money to leave their jobs, or the will to leave their families behind for that long. As a result, many short term programs have sprung up in the past that promise all the same results as the long term programs, but in a matter of weeks.

The likelihood of a two week program having lasting results in terms of battling drug addiction seems highly improbable. Both of these options seem to be pretty unrealistic for most people. The best way to find a drug rehab clinic that will work in the long run and not just be a temporary hiding place from bad influences is to find one that strikes the middle ground, or those that allow you to have an open door type of policy.

These types of drug rehab clinics have been termed "open ended rehab," which seem to be a happy medium between the other two timing options. They offer up both the comprehensive treatment options as well as the high success rates of those programs that are more long term and at the same time are offered at a lower cost and a swift reintegration rate like the short-term, "miracle clinics." These tend to range from 30-90 days in duration, which is fairly realistic. Most people are able to get away from their job for a month or two, if the reason is to save their life from a battle against drugs and alcohol.

There are several steps that one can expect to go through in the process of finding salvation from the specter of drug and alcohol addiction. The first step of course is to admit that there is a problem that needs solving, and to go to one of these treatment programs that will offer the professional help that is necessary for success. You have to realize that addiction is a disease like any other, and it needs treatment by qualified health care professionals. This is not something that people can do alone, once the disease has progressed to a certain point. That can be hard for some to realize and take charge of, but it's imperative to let go and learn how to ask for help before you can achieve success in this matter.

The next step will be undergoing the painful and unpleasant process of detoxification. For those who are addicted to certain hard drugs, such as heroin, this will be messy indeed. It's important to remember that it will not last forever, and there are techniques that can be used by the professionals in the drug or alcohol treatment program to help make the process run more smoothly. Massage therapy and a proper diet can help move the toxins right on out of the body, and it's worth all the pain of the side effects in the end when you are left feeling cleansed, light, and full of energy.

With this new clear head and clean body, you are then ready to face down those issues that have been the root cause of the drug addiction in the first place. People don't just start doing drugs for no reason. There is always a root issue, even if it is simply boredom or dissatisfaction with your life on a normal basis. Realizing whatever this problem is and finding alternative coping methods is essential to ongoing success after finishing up one of these open ended rehab programs. Without alternative solutions, the patient will simply go back to using drugs or alcohol again once they are back in the former situation.

This requires a fair amount of therapy, and also there is a great need to treat the patient on an individual basis. Group therapy can be a useful tool, as can medications that help addicts detox, but the best method will be a combination of all of these different types of drug and alcohol treatments. Experimenting with different options can be a good way to go. Stressing other coping techniques including exercise, relaxation, and meditation helps alleviate the stress of this whole experience, and helps patients gain those valuable tools that they need to get back out there into the world again and be ready to face life.

It's essential that patients that have recently completed an open ended drug treatment program have ongoing support once they get out. Because these programs are not for a whole year or longer term, the patient is going to be exposed to temptation fairly quickly after detoxification.

While they can be given the psychological tools to cope with this in therapy, it's also helpful for them to be given access to a phone number, support group, or email address where they can reach a qualified professional at any given time if they need help to just say no later on. Seeing old friends or old triggers can cause a relapse in seconds, if these other precautionary measures are not taken. With a little bit of time and care, rehab programs can certainly work. It's best to ask plenty of questions before signing up for any rehab program, for the best results.
